What happens at my first Appointment?

At your first appointment we discuss your health history and we give you a Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis, which reflects the health of all your body systems. That takes about 1/2 hour, followed by an acupuncture treatment. The treatment time is 1/2 hr to 45 minutes. Then we spend time talking about a treatment plan for you. We'll focus on alleviating the acute symptoms first; then we continue with treatments to get at the underlying cause of the symptoms; then treatments are focused on keeping you well.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Many insurances cover a substantial portion of an acupuncture treatment. Check with your provider to see what is allowed for acupuncture. Our treatment forms have the numbers and codes you need to submit the fees to your insurance company for reimbursement.

We sometimes hear from our patients that their insurance company will only pay for acupuncture if the treatment service is delivered by an M.D.

In the state of Virginia, there is a parity law that states that if an insurance company covers a treatment, they are required to cover it for all health practitioners who are licensed to perform the treatment.

If your insurance company says they will only cover acupuncture if performed by a medical doctor, print the Insurance Parity Form below and send it to your insurance company, along with a request that they reimburse you for your treatments at Heavenly Bodies Clinic.

Medical Doctors can get a certificate after 200 hours of instruction in needle insertion and point location. This differs from a Licensed Acupuncturist training of a minimum of 3 years of education and theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a full medical system and 500 hours of clinical practice. This translates to a minimum of 2000 hours of education and practical training in using acupuncture and herbs to treat disease processes.

The acupuncturists at Heavenly Bodies Clinic have additional training in Bio-energetic medicine, with certificates of qualification; study and practical training at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and thousands of hours logged of practical study.

The Health History Form is extensive in Chinese Medicine. It gives us an excellent and detailed picture of your health throughout your life. By looking at these details your doctor of Chinese Medicine is able to diagnose your condition, and this diagnosis guides the point selection and treatment plan. The questions help you describe the history of your current condition, and also asks for descriptions of health problems as far back as you can remember.
